Costner in Role of Director-Investor: Kevin Costner showed his dedication to his first directorial effort, the upcoming film “Dance With Wolves,” by putting up some of his own money. People magazine says at one point late last year the movie was two weeks behind schedule in South Dakota and $2 million over budget. But rather than ask his studio, Orion, for more money, Costner took the $2 million out of his own pocket. “There were no excesses on this film, no limos, no jets,” he said. “Every dollar in budget will be seen on the screen.” . . . Costner was also chosen as man of the year by Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals group this year, along with Glenn Close, selected woman of the year. They will be honored on Feb. 13 with a parade through Harvard Square in Cambridge, Mass.
