From Times Staff and Wire Reports

George Saadeh, leader of the Falangists, Lebanon’s largest Christian party, quit the Syrian-backed administration of President Elias Hrawi. Saadeh had held the postal and telecommunications portfolio. A party statement said Saadeh resigned because Hrawi’s Cabinet had failed to become a government of “national unity.” Political sources predicted that the move will strengthen the hand of Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun, commander of 15,000 mainly Christian troops, who dismisses Hrawi as a Syrian puppet.
