From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Iraqi army attacked dozens of villages in southern Iraq and killed many civilians in an apparent attempt to capture army deserters, Iraqi activists said. The London-based Organization of Human Rights in Iraq said that 10,000 people were killed or wounded in an army crackdown that also left tens of thousands homeless. The group is recognized by the United Nations and coordinates with Amnesty International, the London-based rights group. An Iraqi official denied the reports.
