Activist, Ex-Official Sneed Dies
Ferrell Sneed, a longtime Carson civil rights activist and controversial city official, died after suffering a heart attack Sunday. Sneed, who had a history of congestive heart disease, was 58.
Sneed founded the Carson-Torrance chapter of the NAACP and served as its president from 1978 until 1983.
He was also Carson’s revenue manager, serving for 18 years until he was suspended last September and later dismissed. Sneed protested his suspension and dismissal as racist, but city officials said that his department’s performance was poor and that repeated demands for improvement had been ineffective.
Sneed is survived by a 3 1/2-month-old daughter, Samantha; his wife, Vivian, and five grown children from previous marriages.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Judson Baptist Church in Carson.
