Rio Statue Being Restored

RIO DE JANEIRO —
Rio’s landmark Christ the Redeemer statue, cracked and chipped by years of wear on its perch above the city, began getting a needed facelift this week, a city spokeswoman said Thursday. Private firms and the city will jointly spend $2 million to restore the 125-foot monument.
