The Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers will try to keep offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren, who is being mentioned for two vacant head coaching jobs, owner Edward J. DeBartolo Jr. said.

DeBartolo, looking on as the New York Jets and Phoenix Cardinals attempt to woo Holmgren, said he understands the temptation to leave an assistant’s job to become a head coach. But he says Holmgren might not find the change so easy.

“Both situations (the Jets and the Cardinals) are great opportunities, but he has a long career in front of him,” DeBartolo said. “Actually, they’re also tough situations. New York is a tough media market and Phoenix is kind of a tough situation.”

Holmgren met with New York General Manager Dick Steinberg at Indianapolis on Thursday to discuss the Jets’ position.
