NAMES IN THE NEWS : Koop to Receive Truman Award
C. Everett Koop’s actions to warn of the dangers of smoking and press for preventing the spread of acquired immune deficiency syndrome through education earned him this year’s Harry S. Truman Award for Public Service.
The award is presented annually by the city--hometown of the late President--to an American possessing the qualities personified by Truman.
Independence Mayor Barbara Potts announced the choice of Koop, the former U.S. surgeon general, on Thursday. She said his outspoken style and exemplary service to Americans distinguished him.
Koop is now chairman of the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, a board member of AIDS Care Education and Training and chairman of the National Museum of Health and Medicine Foundation.
The award will be presented May 6 at the Truman Library and Museum.
