What with language and other cultural differences, foreign marketing execs sometimes have their work cut out translating Hollywood film titles. In France, for instance, “Jaws” became “Teeth in the Sea.”

More recently, Portugal had “Look Who’s Talking” as “The Talkative Infant”; in Italy, “Bambino Seeks Papa.” “Strange Brothers” was the title for “Rain Man” in Malaysia, where “Big” was “Man Wearing Boy’s Body.” Taiwan had “Field of Dreams” as “Baseball Squares” and “Cookie” as “Tomboy.” In Finland, “Music Box” became “Her Father, a Nazi?”

Most countries translated “Dangerous Liaisons”--itself a translation of a French title--pretty straightforwardly. But in Flemish-speaking Belgium, the film is known as “Lovers for Sport”; in Finland, “Poisonous Relationships.”

And in tropical Malaysia, “Vipers in Heat.”
