SIDELINES : Czech Soars to Ski Cup Victory

Frantisek Jez of Czechoslovakia won a World Cup ski jumping event today by soaring 288 feet, 10 inches on his first effort and 302 feet on his second.

Jez collected 218.6 points for the two jumps on St. Moritz’s 70-meter Olympic hill.

Austria’s Heinz Kuttin finished second at 218.1 after jumps of 295-3 and 298-7.

Ernst Vettori of Austria widened his lead in the World Cup standings on the circuit’s 14th stop, despite finishing third with 217.9 points after jumps of 298-7 and 292.

Americans Tad Langlois and Jim Holland finished 31st and 37th.

Four-time Olympic champion Matti Nykaenen of Finland pulled out of the competition because of a cold.
