Richard Wilson; Controversial Oglala Sioux Tribal President

Richard Wilson, 55, the Oglala Sioux tribal president who was sharply criticized by dissident Indians who occupied Wounded Knee, S.D., for more than two months in 1971. The occupation produced gunfights between the disgruntled Indians and federal agents. Two Indians were killed and there were injuries on both sides. The occupiers saw Wilson as a pawn of the government while they wanted more self rule. Wilson also was held up to ridicule because he was of mixed blood and supposedly too sympathetic to whites. In Rapid City, S.D., on Feb. 1 of heart and kidney failure.
