NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Meteoroid Damage Found on Satellite

A falling science satellite rescued by the shuttle Columbia last month is riddled with thousands of tiny meteoroid craters, providing the best data yet on how such impacts affect spacecraft, project scientist William Kinard said at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The 11-ton Long Duration Exposure Facility satellite was launched in 1984. Reporters allowed to view LDEF saw discoloration, flaking materials and numerous tiny impact craters caused by meteoroids and man-made debris.
