Troops attacked a Communist guerrilla hide-out in the southern Philippines and killed 67 insurgents in a three-day battle, the military said Wednesday.

Eight soldiers died and nine were wounded when hundreds of troops attacked the rebel lair Saturday in Mt. Malindang, 480 miles southeast of Manila, the military said. It was the first major clash this year between government forces and guerrillas of the New People’s Army, which is fighting a 20-year-old insurgency.
