Soviets Out of Feed Grain, Will Have to Cut Back on Meat
The Soviet Union has run out of grain to feed its cattle and will have to cut back meat production as a result, a top agriculture official said today.
The report in the Communist Party daily Pravda spelled more bad news for Soviet consumers, who already have trouble finding meat, which is rationed in many parts of the country.
Vladilen Nikitin, chairman of the Commission for Food and Procurements, disclosed severe dislocations in the country’s grain market, with grim economic and political implications. The worsening food situation has become one of the main complaints of disaffected Soviet citizens.
