WORLD IN BRIEF : TURKEY : 66 Feared Dead in Coal Mine Blast

Sixty-six miners were feared dead in an explosion and fire in an underground coal pit, and angry workers blamed poor safety precautions for one of Turkey’s worst mining disasters. Officials at the Yeniceltek lignite mine said they have given up hope of rescuing alive 58 miners trapped 1,050 feet below the surface after a methane gas explosion and fire. Eight bodies were brought from the mine.
