Ethiopia Copter Crash Kills Soviet General
A helicopter crashed into a mountain in eastern Ethiopia, killing all 17 people aboard, including a Soviet general, two Ethiopian generals and four Ethiopian lawmakers, the state-run news agency said Thursday.
The victims of the Wednesday crash included Maj. Gen. Alexander Simonoff, a Soviet military adviser to the Ethiopian government, and his interpreter. Also killed were Maj. Gen. Berhanu Jembere, commander of the first army in the Ogaden region, and Brig. Gen. Gebreyes Wolde-Hana, secretary of the governing party in eastern Harrar.
