THE SIDELINES : Czech Wins Ski Jump Event

Frantisek Jez of Czechoslovakia won his second World Cup ski jumping meet in three days today, soaring 262 feet, 6 inches, then 278-10.

Jez, coming off a victory at St. Moritz, collected 209.8 points for the two jumps to beat Miran Tepes of Yugoslavia, whose jumps of 262-8 and 274-4 were worth 207 points.

Ari-Pekka Nikkola of Finland finished third.

Jez’s victory on the 15th stop of the World Cup circuit enabled him to close in on overall leader Ernst Vettori of Austria, who finished fifth today. Vettori has 189 points to Jez’ 165. West Germany’s Dieter Thoma is third at 141.

Thoma, who injured himself in a crash at a World Cup event three weeks ago, bungled his second jump today and finished 50th.

American Jim Holland finished 25th with jumps of 243 feet and 252-7.
