Christian Barnard, 24, was sentenced in Bloemfontein, South Africa, to 12 years in prison for the shotgun murder of Frank Budd, father of distance runner Zola Budd.
Barnard could have been sentenced to hang, but Supreme Court Justice A. P. von Coller said there was a reasonable possibility that Barnard was provoked into the killing by Budd’s alleged sexual advances.
