Law Extending Death Penalty in Drug Cases to Take Effect This Week in Singapore

SINGAPORE —
Singapore’s revamped anti-drug law extending the death penalty to traffickers in cannabis, cocaine, hashish and opium will go into force Thursday, a spokesman said Friday.
The Misuse of Drugs Act, amended last November, provides a mandatory death penalty for trafficking in 2.6 pounds of opium, 1.1 pound of cannabis, one ounce of cocaine or seven ounces of hashish, a spokesman for the Central Narcotics Bureau told reporters.
