CYPRESS : Council to Vote on Housing for Elderly

Share

The City Council is scheduled to vote tonight on a plan that would replace 21 low- to moderate-income housing units on the northwest corner of Walker Street and Orange Avenue with a 136-unit senior citizens’ rental project.

Affordable housing for senior citizens is a compatible use for the area because the lot is next to the Cypress Senior Citizen Center and another similar housing project, said Pam Eicholtz, a consultant for the project.

Residents in the 21 units that are scheduled for demolition were relocated last year, she added.

“There is a need for this type of housing in our city,” said Assistant City Planner David Ebeling.

The replacement housing is proposed for a corner of a lot that is occupied by the Cypress Senior Citizen Center and the vacated Cypress Elementary School.

Expanding the existing facilities at the Senior Citizen Center is under study by the council.

If approved, the redevelopment agency will have four years to develop the proposed project. According to the housing plan, it is anticipated to take 12 months to finish and would be open in early 1993.
