Stolen Antiquities: The government of pro-Syrian President Elias Hrawi believes $68 million worth of ancient Roman silver being sold by Sotheby’s auction house was stolen from Lebanon. Muslim sources said Foreign Ministry Director Salah Staitiyeh has approached UNESCO and various Lebanese embassies abroad to try to prevent the sale, scheduled to take place in Zurich this fall. They gave no explanation why the pro-Syrian government believed the 14 ornate silver vessels--platters, jugs and buckets--were stolen.
