Fast Start Carries SDSU Past USIU, 6-3

Mike Kerr’s bases-loaded triple sparked a five-run first inning for San Diego State, which defeated U.S. International, 6-3, Wednesday in a nonconference game at Smith Field.

Rick Navarro (3-0) pitched eight innings for SDSU (6-1), and Rusty Filter came on in the ninth for his first save. Mike Whisonant (1-2) was the loser for USIU (3-6).

UCLA pushed across seven runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the University of San Diego, 11-4, at Jackie Robinson Stadium. USD (3-4) used five pitchers, including three in the first. Starter James Ferguson (0-1) was the loser. Paul Ellis had two home runs for UCLA (10-1).

MEN’S TENNIS

Sixth-ranked California was forced to three sets in five of seven matches but held off San Diego State, 5-2, at Berkeley.

Winning for the Aztecs in singles were No. 2 Tole Marinkovic and No. 6 Hunter Gallaway. Marinkovic defeated Bent Peterson, 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1), and Gallaway defeated Pete Fitzpatrick, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. SDSU’s Dana Gill, No. 4 singles, had two match points in the second set, then lost to Matt Lucena, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.

In No. 3 doubles, Carl Chang, who won the 1987 3-A singles championship at San Dieguito, and Barry Hancock defeated Jeff Belloli and Dax Peterson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to clinch the victory. Cal is 4-1. SDSU fell to 5-2.

The University of San Diego routed visiting Brigham Young, 8-1. Jose Luis Noriega defeated Johnny Matica, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, in No. 1 singles. Chris Toomey, Dan Mattera, J.R. Edwards and Kevin Bradley also won singles for No. 17 USD (4-2).

SOFTBALL

Arizona State swept a doubleheader, 2-0 and 4-2, from USIU in Tempe. Karen Winkler was five for seven with a triple for USIU (3-5). Former Castle Park star Dawn Wood won the second game, allowing seven hits.

WOMEN’S GOLF

San Diego State finished 12th and U.S. International 13th at Arizona Invitational in Tucson. Martina Koch of Arizona overcame second-round leader Lynn Mikulas of Arizona State to win. Koch shot a 74 for a three-day total of 219. Mikulas, a graduate of Grossmont High, had a 78 and finished second at 221. Arizona State won the team title, despite Mikulas competing as an individual.
