Sophia Loren and husband Carlo Ponti have found a new residence in this village after having to quit the tiny apartment listed for tax reasons as their official home.

Their landlord, Alois Blaettler, confirmed Thursday he gave the couple notice to leave the furnished two rooms plus kitchen and bath because his daughter wanted to move in.

“They hardly ever saw the place anyway,” Blaettler said. Village secretary Ernst Minder said the couple easily found a new, equally modest home in the village, which has a population of 4,000.

Fan letters to the new address are unlikely to be answered because their visits there are expected to be equally rare.

The Zurich tabloid Blick said Thursday the couple set up base in the low-tax Swiss canton of Nidwalden more than 30 years ago and moved to Hergiswil six years ago.

Blick said that Ponti pays about $33,000 per year in taxes under a lump-sum deal negotiated with canton tax authorities.
