Presiding Bishop Edmond Browning of the Episcopal Church issued a statement today dissociating himself and other top leaders of the denomination from the ordination of an openly homosexual, non-celibate priest in the diocese of Newark, N.J.

Bishop John Spong, head of the Newark diocese, ordained Robert Williams as a priest to head The Oasis, a diocesan ministry with male and female homosexuals, in a very public and very controversial service last December.

Five weeks later Williams resigned in a storm of controversy after disparaging remarks he allegedly made about celibacy and monogamy.
