The White House was aware of the possibility that drug traffickers in Colombia had surface-to-air missiles in advance of President Bush’s trip last week to a four-nation drug summit, his spokesman said today.

But Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater added that, despite security concerns over the prospect, there is no hard evidence to confirm the reports.

On Monday, police seized 10 shoulder-fired missiles in Bogota from drug traffickers, authorities said.

Asked about the missile seizure, Fitzwater told reporters: “I don’t have specific information. There was intelligence before we left of various kinds, about missiles and rockets and other kinds of equipment with various plans.”
