The last of Princeton University’s all-male eating clubs voted narrowly Monday night to approve admission of women, but it will be at least another year before female students are actually welcome at the table.

The Tiger Inn’s 121 members decided to break with tradition by a five-vote margin, although the exclusive organization refused to disclose the exact results. The vote came on the heels of another referendum by members of the Ivy Club last week to admit women. Tiger and Ivy are the last all-male eating clubs to bar women.

Jen Weiner, co-president of the Organization for Co-Educated Eating Clubs, said she was “really happy and surprised. I was concerned that there would be some backlash because of Ivy’s decision in that the members might want Tiger to remain the last bastion of all-maleness.”

The favorable vote will not immediately open up the club. Under Tiger Inn’s regulations, a majority of the student members must approve admitting women for two consecutive years.
