Rev. James I. McCord; Presbyterian Leader

The Rev. James I. McCord, 70, an internationally known Presbyterian leader in the ecumenical movement and longtime president of Princeton Theological Seminary. McCord received his divinity degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and served churches in Austin, Tex., and Manchester, N.H., before becoming dean of the Austin seminary in 1952. He was president of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches from 1977 to l982. McCord’s diplomatic initiatives contributed to unions of Reformed and Congregational churches in many countries. He was also president and professor of theology at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1959 until his retirement in 1983. That year McCord became chancellor of Princeton’s Center for Theological Inquiry, which he had founded. In Princeton, N.J., on Sunday of unreported causes.
