Lance Deal, a 1988 Olympian in the hammer throw, smashed the American indoor record in the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 78 feet, one-quarter inch, today during the Mobil Indoor Championships.

Deal’s toss broke the mark of 77-9 1/2 by Jud Logan in 1985. The world indoor best of 78-6 1/2 was by Tore Johnsen of Norway in 1984.

The weight throw and the men’s and women’s shot puts were held at Princeton University. The rest of the meet’s events were at Madison Square Garden.
