World IN BRIEF : IVORY COAST : 150 Pro-Democracy Protesters Beaten

The government, under pressure from the Roman Catholic Church, freed more than 150 pro-democracy student protesters who were beaten and detained after a 10-hour occupation of Abidjan Cathedral. The students said they will resume their protests, which pose a challenge to President Felix Houphouet-Boigny. They said they are angered by the gulf between rich and poor in the Ivory Coast.
