WORLD : Reagan to Join E. Berlin Rally
At his own request, Ronald Reagan--the “Evil Empire’s” biggest enemy--has been invited to appear at an East Berlin rally on March 16, two days before East Germany’s first free elections, the official news agency ADN said today.
The 79-year-old former President will find a very different atmosphere in Berlin from his last visit in 1987, when he stayed only on the western side of the city.
His call then for the Berlin Wall to be torn down was dismissed by the East German government as Cold War propaganda.
Now not only the Wall but the whole communist structure in East Germany has come tumbling down.
ADN said Reagan asked specifically if he could come and speak at the rally for the centrist Alliance of Free Democrats.
