A government official’s prediction that 230,000 Soviet Jews could immigrate into Israel this year heightened fears that the country is not prepared to handle the influx. Israeli media noted that the new figure heightens confusion over immigration estimates, since most officials are predicting that about 100,000 Soviet Jews will arrive this year. Even this number could be a problem, because Israel has geared up to receive only half that total.
