From Times wire services

Coal miners in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk staged a warning strike at 21 mines today to demand the resignation of the entire regional Communist Party leadership, participants and news reports said.

Seven miners were in the third day of a hunger strike in front of the party headquarters in the city of 1.1 million people to back demands that party bosses quit en masse, Radio Moscow’s Interfax news service said.

But the party brass refused to consider resigning until a regional party conference scheduled for April 6-7, Interfax said.
