P. M. BRIEFING : Japan Telephone Breakup Urged
- Share via
TOKYO — A committee of Japan’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications today recommended breaking up the giant Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp., but company officials are resisting the idea.
A ministry advisory committee recommended breaking up NTT into separate local-service and long-distance companies by the end of March, 1996.
“The breakup of NTT is not an appropriate alternative,” company President Haruo Yamaguchi told reporters. “We hope the government will make a decision more acceptable to us.”
The advisory committee concluded the breakup was needed to promote efficient management at NTT and create fair competition in the domestic telecommunications market.
