NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Senate Approves Volunteer Grants
On a 78-19 vote, the Senate approved a $125-million program of grants to encourage volunteer work. The measure would earmark $25 million for school-based programs involving teacher aides, tutoring and the teaching of reading. It also would provide $35 million for a youth service corps, involving park and forest cleanup programs for volunteers 16 to 25 years old. A program for individuals 17 and older would focus on service in education, the environment, public safety and other fields, and would be cleared to receive $25 million.
