First ANC Members to Return Home Receive Hero’s Welcome : 1st ANC Members to Return Home Hailed as Heroes
The first African National Congress members to return home to South Africa since President Frederik W. de Klerk lifted a ban on the guerrilla organization arrived to a hero’s welcome today.
Veteran activists Ray Alexander, 76, and her 83-year-old husband, Jack Simon, were greeted at Johannesburg’s Jan Smuts Airport by about 500 ANC supporters and family members.
The frail couple emerged into the arrival hall after their flight from the Zambian capital of Lusaka with clenched fists held high, blowing kisses to the cheering crowd.
