Cigarette Trial Award: A federal jury ordered Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. to pay $148.8 million to Liggett Group Inc. for attempting to put Liggett’s generic cigarettes out of business through illegal pricing. The award followed a seven-month antitrust trial in U.S. District Court on allegations that B&W; illegally tried to stifle expansion of generic cigarette sales by its competitor in the early 1980s. B&W; was convicted of selling generic cigarettes at below their cost of manufacture, giving illegal discounts to undercut Liggett sales and organizing a plan to displace Liggett in the generic market.
