Lemon Grove
The son of a retired police officer was ordered Friday to stand trial for murder in the death of his grandfather.
After a brief preliminary hearing in which two witnesses were called, Michael Mario Lopez, 22, was bound over to Superior Court.
Lopez is charged with killing his maternal grandfather, Bruce Corey, 63, who was found Jan. 4, beaten and stabbed, in the garage of his Lemon Grove home.
Lopez’s father, Manny Lopez, who retired from the San Diego Police Department in 1979, was in the courtroom Friday but did not testify. Deputies said Manny Lopez assisted them in locating his son.
A trial date will be set March 16. Meanwhile, Lopez remains in County Jail on $200,000 bail.
