Former FDA Chief Appointed to Lead Review of Agency
Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Charles C. Edwards was named Friday to lead a special government committee to review the agency, which is currently embroiled in a scandal over generic drugs.
In announcing Edwards’ appointment, Health and Human Services Secretary Louis W. Sullivan called the FDA “one of the most important guardians of American public health” and said it is “crucially important that FDA carry out its missions in the most effective manner possible.”
Edwards served as FDA commissioner from 1969 through 1973 and was assistant secretary for health from 1973 through 1975.
