From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A witness against Joseph Hazelwood in his Anchorage trial clashed angrily with an attorney who suggested the witness had been coached to give damaging testimony about the skipper of the Exxon Valdez. William Milwee Jr., an expert in salvaging grounded vessels, shouted: “They didn’t tell me to say anything.” But defense attorney Michael Chalos, using state documents, showed that prosecutors laid out a scenario to Milwee, then asked him to prepare an expert case that proved Hazelwood acted recklessly. Milwee insisted he developed his own scenario.
