NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : SAC Chief Asks Full B-2 Bomber Funds

The chief of the Strategic Air Command said that the critical mission for the B-2 Stealth bomber is to hunt down Soviet mobile missiles and that the program should be preserved. Gen. John T. Chain Jr. told a House committee that the sweeping changes in the Soviet Union have not included a slowdown in upgrading of air defenses. Chain said he supported production of all 132 Stealth bombers sought by the Pentagon, at a cost of about $75 billion.
