LOCAL : Officer Admits Drug Scam

Los Angeles County Sheriff Sgt. Robert R. Sobel, the central figure in a money skimming scandal, pleaded guilty today to a federal conspiracy charge and admitted his role in the alleged theft of seized drug money. Sobel, 45, also pleaded guilty to a single count of filing a false income tax return and has agreed to cooperate with government prosecutors.
Nine other veteran narcotics officers have pleaded not guilty to charges that they participated in the theft of more than $1.4 million in seized drug cash. The wife of one of the deputies was also indicted on charges that she helped disguise the stolen money in various bank accounts. She also pleaded not guilty.
