WORLD : Sikhs Kill 19 in Punjab Market

CHANDIGARH, India — Sikh extremists exploded a grenade and opened fire in a crowded market today in Punjab state, and at least 19 people were killed and 38 wounded, police said.
Press Trust of India, citing unofficial reports, gave a higher death toll, saying about 25 people were killed.
Police Chief K. P. S. Gill, who provided the police casualty report, said at least 10 gunmen were involved in the attack at 8:15 p.m. in Abohar.
Another police spokesman said the attackers wore masks and arrived on foot. “Nobody knows how they escaped,” he said.
