WORLD : China Prosecutions Continue
Participants in last year’s pro-democracy movement are still being investigated and prosecuted, Beijing Mayor Chen Xitong said today, but he refused to reveal how many people have been arrested or jailed.
At a wide-ranging news conference, Chen also vowed to suppress any further anti-government unrest and dismissed recent complaints that Chinese had been harassed by police for contacts with foreign journalists and business people.
“Turmoil like that (last spring) will never again be allowed in Beijing,” Chen said. “We will stop any turmoil, big or small.”
