WORLD : Haiti Leader’s Wife Flees Unrest

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Political unrest grew in Haiti today as hundreds of people demonstrated outside the presidential palace and diplomats reported that President Prosper Avril’s wife had left the country.
Witnesses said troops fired in the air and charged into the protest rally by about 1,000 demonstrators who were demanding that Avril step down from power.
Diplomatic sources said Avril’s wife flew out of the country to Washington on Wednesday night, and there was speculation that he might soon join her.
