Key China Party Meeting Reportedly in Session in Beijing
The Communist Party’s Central Committee is believed to have begun a key meeting to decide economic and personnel matters before the nation’s Parliament convenes later this month, diplomats said Friday.
The committee would be meeting for the first time since November, when the decision-making body approved a three-year economic austerity program and announced that senior leader Deng Xiaoping was resigning from his last party post.
The Central Committee usually meets twice a year, once before the annual session of the National People’s Congress, China’s rubber-stamp legislature.
The party, concerned about popular unrest because of the economic downturn and the harsh political climate following the military crackdown on the pro-democracy movement last June, is expected to approve some easing of austerity measures.
The Central Committee is also likely to discuss the rapid political and economic changes taking place in the Soviet Union and East Europe.
