Mike Phillips will direct Jerome Kern’s “Show Boat” for Opera Pacific at the Orange County Performing Arts Center July 13 through 22. Phillips served as associate director for the Houston Grand Opera’s revivals of “Show Boat” in 1982 and 1989. Opera Pacific will be using the sets and costumes from the 1982 production. Meanwhile, the company is negotiating with Ron Raines to appear as the gambler Gaylord Ravenal. Raines is scheduled to sing the role when “Show Boat” is presented at Michigan Opera Theatre Nov. 16 through 25. Opera Pacific general director David DiChiera also is general director of MOT.
