Rights Acquired: Chiron Ophthalmics Inc. in Irvine has agreed to buy the marketing, manufacturing and licensing rights to a line of silicone intra-ocular lenses made by Staar Surgical Co. in Monrovia.
Staar will receive up to $4 million in prepaid royalties.
The agreement between Staar and Chiron, supplier of lenses and other products to ophthalmic surgeons, has generated some controversy recently.
Former Staar president Thomas R. Waggoner was locked out of his offices last summer after the company’s board rebelled against his plans to sign an $11-million licensing agreement with Chiron.
