Vitamin C and Iron

Share

Question: Does Vitamin C have anything to do with the amount of iron a person has? I know women sometimes have a problem with iron, and I’d like to prevent the problem rather than treating it after it happens. I would also like to know what symptoms a woman would have if she’s anemic.

Answer: Some researchers suggest that Vitamin C may enhance the absorption of iron. The combination of iron and Vitamin C is easily attainable. For example, if you have an iron-fortified cereal for breakfast, simply add a glass of orange juice to the menu.

Symptoms of anemia, an indication of iron deficiency, include fatigue, headaches and dizziness, brittle nails and a variety of breathing problems.
