Britain’s Prince Charles and his wife, Diana, arrived Thursday for a five-day visit to strengthen relations with Nigeria, its former colonial power.

The couple were welcomed to the capital of Africa’s most populous nation by Adm. Augustus Aikhomu, second in command in Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s military government.

The Princess of Wales looked cool in a green dress as she stepped into the West African heat. The visitors were driven to State House, where Babangida was giving them a state banquet.

Charles, the heir to the British throne, visited Nigeria in 1956 with his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, when he was 8. The prince and his wife will visit a large bronze statue of his mother sculpted during that trip.
