A man who climbed over the side of a cliff to retrieve a model plane Friday tumbled and fell about 225 feet and suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

Ian Gittens, 32, of Redondo Beach, had gone to the seaside cliff in the 800 block of Paseo del Mar to fly a remote-controlled model plane, officials said. The cliff is a popular spot for model airplane enthusiasts.

About 1:20 p.m., Gittens climbed over the cliff’s edge to retrieve the plane from a spot about 20 feet below the top when he slipped in the soft dirt, tumbling and falling about 225 feet, officials said. A Los Angeles County Fire Department crew found Gittens partially conscious and flew him to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was treated for extensive lacerations.
