Zenon Rossides; Cyprus’ Former U.N. Diplomat

Zenon Rossides, 95, a diplomat who represented Cyprus at the United Nations for 20 years. Rossides was his country’s first delegate to the United Nations when Cyprus achieved independence from Britain in 1960. He held the post until 1979. From 1921 to 1931, Rossides represented the National Council of Cyprus in London. During a 1931 uprising on the island, he was arrested by British colonial officials and confined in a village for two years. From 1960 to 1973, Rossides was the Cypriot ambassador to the United States. The career diplomat was also a poet and the author of three books on the struggle for Cypriot independence.
